Notes on Painting Process

Painting, like memory or music, arises from half-submerged images. Places, whether actual or recollected -- particularly fields or shorelines -- are often the starting point for a new series of work or the impetus to return to a major theme or motif. These places are not arbitrarily chosen, but often bear the freight of particular emotional recognitions.

The painting hand traces outcroppings, whitewashes, excavations, restorations, lost- and-found lines and masses, until what is seen and what is felt are harmoniously reconciled.
